Summary

Sustainable Solutions in Yemeni Displacement Camps

• Zahra, a Yemeni refugee, faced daily challenges due to power shortages.

• The International Organization for Migration (IOM) provided over 1,172 solar power systems to Al Dehywi and Al Shaihal displacement sites in Al Khukhah.

• The solar power has transformed lives in the camps, allowing safe night navigation, learning and play, and a sense of security.

• The initiative by IOM exemplifies how sustainability can bring hope and dignity amid crisis.

Zahra, displaced by conflict in Yemen, faced the daily struggle of living in a camp shrouded in darkness. Simple tasks like navigating at night or preparing food became dangerous and inconvenient. This story extends to countless others, highlighting the dire need for sustainable solutions in displacement sites.

The power shortage in Yemen, exacerbated by the conflict, plunged displacement camps into darkness. This lack of electricity posed significant safety and security concerns, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, and individuals with disabilities.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) stepped in, providing over 1,172 solar power systems to Al Dehywi and Al Shaihal displacement sites in Al Khukhah. These systems, complete with batteries and inverters, offered a sustainable solution for lighting and basic electrical needs.

The introduction of solar power has transformed lives in the camps. Families can now navigate safely at night, children can learn and play without limitations, and women feel secure in their shelters. Additionally, the ability to charge phones allows families to stay connected, a crucial lifeline for those separated during displacement.

The solar systems also address the issue of heat. With limited ventilation, summers become unbearable. Now, families can use fans to cool their shelters, creating a more comfortable living environment.

Zahra's story exemplifies the impact of sustainable solutions. The simple act of providing light has not only improved safety and security but also restored a sense of normalcy and empowered families to rebuild their lives. This initiative by IOM serves as a powerful example of how sustainability can bring hope and dignity even amid crisis.
