Security in Yemen: Why Comprehensive Human Security is Crucial for Yemen's Future

It is important to protect people and enable them to live a dignified life free of fear and threat

  • Yemen's decade-long conflict has triggered a devastating humanitarian crisis. Millions face food insecurity, lack access to clean water and healthcare, and grapple with mental health issues.

  • Comprehensive human security, encompassing food, healthcare, education, and mental health support, is vital for Yemen's recovery.

  • The international community must play a proactive role. Increased aid, diplomatic efforts, and pressure on warring parties are crucial to achieving comprehensive human security for Yemen.

Yemen, a nation ravaged by a brutal conflict for nearly a decade, stands on the precipice of an even deeper humanitarian crisis. As the fragile truce brokered by the UN crumbled in October 2022, the hopes for a reprieve evaporated, leaving the Yemeni people grappling with a multitude of hardships.

The most immediate concern is the alarming level of food insecurity. The 2024 Humanitarian Needs Overview paints a grim picture: a staggering 17.6 million Yemenis, half the population, are likely to face severe food insecurity. This translates to millions of families struggling to put food on the table, with children bearing the brunt of malnutrition.

Beyond food, access to essential services like clean water and healthcare remains a luxury for many. The conflict has crippled vital infrastructure, leading to water shortages and outbreaks of water-borne diseases. An estimated 2.7 million pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under five require treatment for acute malnutrition, a stark illustration of the devastating impact on the most vulnerable.

The healthcare system itself hangs by a thread. Limited access to medical facilities and a shortage of qualified personnel leave treatable illnesses potentially fatal. Furthermore, a shocking 70% of children under three haven't received basic vaccinations, leaving them susceptible to preventable diseases. This lack of access to basic healthcare compounds the existing problems, creating a vicious cycle of illness and malnutrition.

The economic fallout from the conflict adds another layer of misery. Disruptions in public services like education and sanitation have further crippled daily life. Livelihood opportunities are scarce, pushing many Yemenis deeper into poverty. This economic despair exacerbates mental health issues, a critical yet often neglected aspect of human security. Millions of Yemenis require mental health support to deal with the trauma of war, displacement, and loss. However, only a fraction of them have access to these crucial services.

In this desperate situation, the concept of comprehensive human security takes on paramount importance.  This approach goes beyond just physical security and encompasses a range of factors like food security, access to healthcare, education, and mental health support. It recognizes that true security comes when these basic needs are met, allowing individuals and communities to live with dignity and reach their full potential.

For Yemen to rise from the ashes, a comprehensive human security strategy must be prioritized. Immediate steps are needed to address the food crisis by providing humanitarian aid and restarting local food production. Restoring critical infrastructure like water and sanitation systems is essential to prevent further outbreaks of disease.

Investing in the healthcare system by equipping hospitals, sending medical supplies, and training personnel is crucial to saving lives. Ensuring access to vaccinations and basic healthcare can mitigate future health emergencies.

Economic revival is another key element. Supporting local businesses, creating job opportunities, and revitalizing public services can offer Yemenis a path to self-sufficiency.

Finally, addressing mental health is a vital step in fostering a sense of normalcy and rebuilding lives.  Investing in mental health professionals, establishing trauma support programs, and promoting mental health awareness can help Yemenis cope with the psychological scars of war.

The international community has a critical role to play in supporting a comprehensive human security strategy for Yemen.  Increased humanitarian aid, diplomatic efforts to broker a lasting ceasefire, and pressure on warring parties to prioritize civilian safety are all vital steps.

Yemen's future hinges on its ability to achieve comprehensive human security. By investing in the basic needs and well-being of its people, Yemen can begin the long road toward recovery and build a future where security, dignity, and opportunity prevail.
