Development challenges in Yemen and prospects for sustainability

Yemen: Sustainable development is the way out of crises

Summary:

  • Conflicts and crises have caused a sharp decline in Yemen's development trajectory, exacerbating poverty and inequality.

  • Some Yemenis have turned to adaptive initiatives that seek to find sustainable solutions to crises, such as drinking water projects, sustainable agriculture, and solar energy.

  • Localizing development, through community participation and empowerment and promoting good governance, is essential to ensuring a better future for Yemen.

Yemen's development trajectory has been facing a sharp decline for years, which has exacerbated humanitarian crises and declining levels of well-being. This decline is linked to multiple factors, the most important of which are the ongoing conflict in the country, economic collapse, lack of resources, and weak governance.

The ongoing conflict in Yemen has destroyed infrastructure, displaced populations, and disrupted economic activity, profoundly affecting development opportunities. The conflict caused the collapse of the national currency, high inflation rates, and a decline in investments, exacerbating poverty and inequality.

Yemen also suffers from a scarcity of natural resources, especially water, which poses a major challenge to agricultural development and food security. not to mention

Weak state institutions, the absence of the rule of law, and widespread corruption hinder development efforts.

Despite the challenges, some Yemenis have turned to adaptive initiatives that seek sustainable solutions to crises. These initiatives include, but are not limited to: establishing community drinking water projects powered by solar energy to provide clean water to communities, adopting modern and sustainable agricultural methods to reduce costs and increase productivity, and using solar energy to generate electricity in homes and farms, to compensate for the lack of public network supplies.

Sustainable development is a comprehensive concept that goes beyond mere economic growth, to include raising the standard of living, protecting the environment, and achieving social justice.

Localization of development is necessary to ensure its sustainability and effectiveness, by involving all members of society in the planning and implementation process, to ensure that their real needs are met, and to support popular development efforts to empower communities by providing them with the skills, knowledge, and tools necessary to achieve their goals. Moreover, the rule of law and the fight against corruption must be strengthened to build an enabling environment for development.

Helping Yemen achieve sustainable development requires a concerted effort from all actors, focusing on localizing development to make it more effective and sustainable. Thus, Yemen can emerge from its crises and achieve a better future for its people.
